Who knew TV can be educational?

Tonight we were watching Two and a Half Men, Sacagawea was mentioned, I asked Thomas if he knew who Sacagawea was. He answered "She was a guide for Lewis and Clark".

I asked him where he got that from adding "Night at the Museum?"

His reply was "yes and from The Simpsons". Then came up with "See you can learn things from movies and TV.

It is true because the only time I've ever heard of her was in movies, had never heard of Lewis and Clark until Night at the Museum

A couple of visitors stopped by today.

These 2 beautiful girls stopped by today.

Have no idea where they came from, the only place around here that has Peacocks (& Hens) is a wildlife park a couple of miles away. They were obviously used to people we were able to walk out in the yard without panicking them.

Lunch?

"Come on Mum open the door. Puleeeaaase"

Wider, can't fit my head through.

I don't think they have had any experience with cats, they were curious and came up to the door to check the cat out.

Leave Humpty Dumpty alone!!!!!!

What is up with some people who feel the need to change Nursery Rhymes, to sanitise them? Now they are going after Humpty Dumpty, wanting to change the line "couldn't put Humpty together again" to "Made Humpty feel happy again". Really what is wrong with some people?

Firstly this rhyme was originally a riddle, the Question at the end has been left off over the years. It asked what Humpty was - answer: an egg.

Secondly these type of old rhymes were often used as lessons for the hard things in life. Basically if you fall off a wall, there is the chance that you may not be able "to be put back together again". How many of us have reminded our children about Humpty when they unwittingly have put themselves in a similar situation. Just saying you may get hurt often doesn't get through to them. I'd rather quote a rhyme with a lesson to stop them from doing it than explain to a child why they have injured themselves.

When my daughter was 3 we were walking over a bridge and she saw some teenagers sitting on one of the bridge's side walls. She walked up to them and told them to get off there before they fell just like Humpty did. She wasn't traumatised but could see the consequences of what may happen. It's better to learn these lessons this way than to learn them the hard way.

Humpty Dumpty must have been my favourite nursery rhyme, between the ages of 2 and 5 I always asked for a Humpty Dumpty birthday cake.

Another reason why you should always tie your shoes

We all know about tripping on an untied shoe lace but did you know that one can leave you trapped.

The kids and I decided to buy Chinese takeout for dinner tonight so we headed to the car, Thomas shut and locked the door behind him while I started the car. I wondered why he wasn't moving from the door, he was standing there looking at me strangely. He lifted his foot to show me that his shoe lace was trapped in the door, he tugged and tugged while I sat in the car howling with laughter. I had to hand his sister the house keys so she could rescue him.

He tried telling me it wasn't funny but he was laughing himself. He decided it was lucky it happened then and not when he was leaving for school. He would have been trapped most of the day - he'd have Buckley's of his sister hearing the doorbell any time before 12.

But what did I do Officer?

Was driving home from work in bumper to bumper traffic, when I hear a siren going off. It sounded like a car alarm from one of the many car yards by the side of the road but I noticed it was getting louder even though I was barely moving. Looked into my rear vision mirror just as an unmarked police car pulled up behind me. I'm wondering what I could have done and pulled forward to see what he did, he blasted his horn so I figured he was pulling me over. I'm wondering what I could have done in barely moving traffic and as soon as I see a break I pull into the curbside lane, hoping he just moves past me. But no he followed me over, with dread rising I start to park - still wondering what I could have done when he pulls out from behind me, passes by then comes back into my lane and jumps on the brakes. By this time I'm thinking "What the..?", then he turns a corner turns off his lights and pulls a driveway near other police cars. Leaves me wondering whether his shift was over and he wasn't getting any over time. Scared me silly, I had to pull into a service station to gather what wits I had left and cool off with a drink.

Yesterday a similar thing happened, I was at an intersection when I heard a siren, (proper police siren not a car alarm sound). My lights turned green but I sat there until a police car came screaming through the red light. Just up the road he turned his siren and lights off. He sat in traffic for a moment before changing lanes and heading through the town centre, that's when I realised he was heading for the Police Station.

Tell me if I am wrong, but I was sure that flashing lights, sirens and going through red lights was only supposed to be done only in an emergency. One of my friends was once pulled over for making an illegal u turn at lights, she hadn't noticed the police car until it was too late and he went through the red light to get her. The officer approached her telling her that he was going to book her, she said to him "But you went through a red light". He looked back at the lights and realised what he had done had been much more dangerous to others, said to her "lets forget this happened" before heading back to his car.
